Learn Chinese: phonetic and vocabulary 6

Note: when a translation of a character is in brackets, this means that this character cannot be used alone. This does not mean that it has no meaning, just as the roots of words in our Western languages.

diǎn : hour / (a little)

yì diǎnr : a little

zhōng : bell / clock / (after diǎn = hour on the dot)

fēn : minute / divide / part

xiànzài : now. Reminder: x is pronounced like 's' but with the top middle part of the tongue.

shàngwǔ : morning

xiàwǔ : afternoon

zuótiān : yesterday

shíhou : moment. Reminder: after s, sh, c, ch, z, r, the i is a buzzed continuation of the consonant.

shénme shíhou : when?

néng : to can

lái : to come

: to go. The q is pronounced like a 'ts' with an explosion of air and with the top middle part of the tongue like the x.

qùnián : last year

huí : (to return)

huíqù : to return (getting away) (see grammar)

huílai : to return (getting closer) (see grammar). Please note that lái loses its tone.

kàn : to look, to see. Please note that k is pronounced with an explosion of air.

: to hit / practice (a martial art)

diànhuà : phone

shuōhuà : to speak (see grammar)

dǎ diànhuà : to call (phone)

jiā : family, home

le : modal particle indicating that the situation is new (change of situation). See the grammar. The e is pronounced very open.

méi : negation (in a past context). This chinese character has already been seen in lesson 2 in the expression méi guānxi "Never mind".

liǎng : number "two" for the time and quantities (see grammar).

wèi : Hey ! (telephone greeting)
