我的理想
Wǒ de lǐxiǎng
My dream

  • 理想 has the meaning of the word "ideal", but the translation "My ideal" does not reproduce the meaning in Chinese which implies a "dream" to be fulfilled in life or an idealized way of life.

每个人都会有许多浪漫的理想,理想不都是“高,大,上”,只要是自己感兴趣的。
Měi gè rén dōu huì yǒu xǔduō làngmàn de lǐxiǎng, lǐxiǎng bù dōu shì “gāo, dà, shàng”, zhǐ yào shì zìjǐ gǎn xìngqù de.
Everyone has many romantic dreams. Dreams are not all "high, tall and superior", it just have to be what interests us.

  • does not only have the meaning of "to go up" or "above". It is also used to mean "superior". For example, the famous Taoist proverb: 上善若水 "Higher ability is like water." Precept that we find in the Chinese martial arts.

小时候听过一个故事 : 森林里,动物们决定举办一个晚会,这次演出吸引了几乎所有的动物。他们都很积极,准备的节目各有特点,小鸟要给大家唱歌,老虎要跳舞,小猫要画画儿,猴子要讲故事,狮子说他给大家照相,熊猫说:“我不会表演,但是我可以当观众,为大家鼓掌。”最后只剩下小牛了,她想了好久,忽然得意地说:“我负责为大家送免费的牛奶!”
Xiǎoshíhòu tīngguò yī gè gùshì: Sēnlín lǐ, dòngwùmen juédìng jǔbàn yī gè wǎnhuì, zhè cì yǎnchū xīyǐn le jīhū suǒyǒu de dòngwù. Tāmen dōu hěn jījí, zhǔnbèi de jiémù gè yǒu tèdiǎn, xiǎo niǎo yào gěi dàjiā chànggē, lǎohǔ yào tiàowǔ, xiǎo māo yào huàhuàr, hóuzi yào jiǎng gùshì, shīzi shuō tā gěi dàjiā zhàoxiàng, xióngmāo shuō: “Wǒ bù huì biǎoyǎn, dànshì wǒ kěyǐ dāng guānzhòng, wéi dàjiā gǔzhǎng.” Zuìhòu zhǐ shèng xià xiǎo niúle, tā xiǎngle hǎojiǔ, hūrán déyì dì shuō:“Wǒ fùzé wéi dàjiā sòng miǎnfèi de niúnǎi!”
When I was young, I heard a story: in the forest, the animals decided to hold a party. This time, the performance attracted almost all the animals. They were all very enthusiastic and each program that was prepared had its particularity. The little bird was going to sing for everybody, the tiger was going to dance, the little cat was going to paint, the monkey was going to tell stories. The lion said he would take pictures of everyone. The panda says, "I do not know how to perform, but I can take the role of spectator and applaud you all." In the end, only the cow was left. She thought for a long moment and suddenly said proudly: "I will offer everyone free milk!"

  • 动物们 has the mark of the plural because the story personalizes the animals. Normally, is reserved for personal pronouns and people under certain conditions.
  • 积极 "to be positive" also means "to be enthusiastic" or, in more modern language, "to be motivated".
  • has a lot of meaning, in this passage, it means "to take the role of": 当观众"take the role of spectator". It is often found with the trades: 当我想当医生。 "I want to be a doctor."
  • There is no difference between 剩下 and "to remain". The choice of one or the other depends on the rhythm of the sentence.
  • In 她想了好久, has the same meaning as "very" but a little stronger. We could also have said 她想了很长时间。.

你对一件事情感兴趣,一定要主动、努力地去实现,即使你的理想很一般。也不要因为天天忙于工作和生活,而让理想逐渐地离我们远去。我的同学,从小就想成为一名警察 ,然而由于种种原因,她没能当上警察。
Nǐ duì yī jiàn shìqíng gǎn xìngqù, yīdìng yào zhǔdòng, nǔlì de qù shíxiàn, jíshǐ nǐ de lǐxiǎng hěn yībān. Yě bú yào yīnwèi tiāntiān mángyú gōngzuò hé shēnghuó, ér ràng lǐxiǎng zhújiàn de lí wǒmen yuǎn qù. If you are interested in something, you must take the initiative and work hard to achieve it, even if your dream is very commonplace. Nor should you let your dream go away by being busy every day with work and life. My classmate wanted to be a policewoman ever since she was a kid. But because of various reasons, she could not become a police officer.

  • "To be interested in something": + something + 感兴趣.
  • 一般 "in general" can be used as a verb with the meaning of "to be commonplace, common". For example: 那个人很一般。 "This person is very commonplace." 他穿得很一般。 "He dresses in a very common way."
  • can be used after a verb. It then takes on the meaning of "to be in" which is translated here as "in": 忙于工作 "to be busy in work" ⟶ "to be busy with work". The original meaning of was "to be at," as .
  • "To be far" + "to go" 远去 "to go away".
  • 种种 "all kinds of" has the same structure as 天天 "every day" or 人人 "everybody".
  • 她没能当上警察。 We could have said: 她没能当警察。, but has here a resultive verb function with the idea of "to access".

Deng Yaping is a Chinese table tennis player, but her size is only one meter and fifty-five. Many people thought that she was not made to play table tennis. She had no intention of giving up, and thanks to the efforts made, she changed the point of view of these people. It has become the number one in Asia at the age of fifteen and won first place worldwide at the age of 16.

  • 一米五五, theoretically, we should write 一米五十五, but when there is no ambiguity, the Chinese sometimes make the elision of the powers of ten.
  • Same remark for the classifier in 这一看法: 这一个看法.

理想有时候不只有一个,你得放弃和选择,选择最适合自己的,自己最感兴趣的。
Lǐxiǎng yǒu shíhòu bù zhǐ yǒu yī gè, nǐ děi fàngqì hé xuǎnzé, xuǎnzé zuì shìhé zìjǐ de, zìjǐ zuì gǎn xìngqù de.
Sometimes we do not have only one dream. You have to make choices and sacrifices. We must choose the dream that suits us best and for which we are most interested.

  • The character has several pronunciations: děi "to have to", "to obtain" et de verbal suffix of the degree complement.
  • 放弃 means "to give up". The word "sacrifice" 牺牲 xīshēng is much stronger.
